Information and Explanations to assist you

Adhesive Label Application

Hand Application
If you are applying your labels by hand, then the direction that the labels come off the roll are not critical.

Machine Application
If you are applying your labels by machine, the direction and orientation in which your labels dispense the rolls is critical. See below for additional information on Unwind Directions

Label Unwind Direction

Label unwind direction is critical when machine applying your labels. Labels can be wound in or out on the rolls, and they can dispense top, bottom, left, or right, from the rolls. This is all based on the text orientation of the label. The company applying your labels can provide you with the unwind direction that is required. See the Unwind Chart on the Quote Request Page

Adhesive Label Material

Gloss Paper
Gloss Paper is the most common and most economical material choice. It is suitable for use in dry, indoor areas, though can be used in a refrigerator or freezer, and is more durable when coated with a lamination. It is more opaque than a white film, but may not be opaque enough to cover up high contrast text.

Silver Metallized Paper
Silver Metallic Paper can also be coated with ink colors, to give a transparent tint of that color, giving you an awesome effect. For example, a yellow printed area would give you gold, or a blue would give you a metallic blue. By adding white behind a color, the silver does not show through, giving you an opaque, solid color. Just as the Gloss Paper, above, this material is suitable for use in dry, indoor areas, though can be used in a refrigerator or freezer, and is more durable when coated with a lamination. It is also completely opaque.

White Indoor Film
This is a White Polypropylene Film, suitable for indoor applications. White Film is more durable than paper and even more so when coated with an overlam. It is not as opaque as paper. For cover-up situations, use a cover-up material.

Clear Indoor Film
This is a Clear Polypropylene Film, suitable for indoor applications. Clear Film is more durable when coated with an overlam. Though Flexographic and Digital label printing have limitations on extreme ink opacity, when a printed color needs to be opaque, 1 - 2 layers of white are printed first. Each layer of White adds a color(station) to the label and label cost.

White Outdoor Vinyl Film
The White Outdoor Vinyl Film is a 4 mil white Vinyl, with a high tack permanent adhesive. We use this material for equipment safety labels, for example. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. It is always suggested to test samples for unique applications.

Removable Gloss Paper
This white paper has an adhesive that is removable from most all surfaces. This is the same material that we use to print the 1-800 credit card labels. You should ALWAYS test samples if needing a removable label on something other than a smooth, flat surface. Plastic surfaces that have a texture will actually use a low tack permanent adhesive to achieve the same affect as a removable adhesive. Removable Gloss Paper labels are an excellent choice for smooth plastic or glass.

Cover-up Gloss Paper
This white paper has an opaque backing on the adhesive side that is designed specifically to cover-up printed areas, such as printing mistakes on other labels or cartons. Please note that due to the black coating, the front of the label may tend to have a gray-ish appearance.

Overcoat

Clear Overlam
A film laminate that provides a gloss finish and protects the ink from rubbing off or smearing. It will also add strength to the label, especially paper labels. It is used for indoor applications.

Matte Overlam
A film laminate that provides a flat, soft matte finish and protects the ink from rubbing off or smearing. It will also add strength to the label, especially paper labels. It is used for indoor applications.

Outdoor Clear Overlam
A polyester film laminate that will not crack, yellow, or peel for a few years. This lamination is to be used with White Outdoor Vinyl.

Clear UV Varnish
A glossy overcoat that provides minimal ink/label protection. Typically lower in cost than overlam. Ideal for use on labels not subjected to scuffing or wet conditions.

Matte UV Varnish
A less-glossy overcoat that provides minimal ink/label protection. Typically lower in cost than overlam. Ideal for use on labels not subjected to scuffing or wet conditions.

Printable/Stampable Varnish
A clear overcoat used for date or product information stamping. Can also be written on with a pen or marker.

Number of Versions / Total Quantity Price Breaks

If you have multiple label designs that are the same size, stock, and laminate you can place them on the same quote for total quantity label pricing. For example, two items at 5,000 labels each would be a 10,000 quantity break. Individual item quantities can be given at the time of placing your order.

Number of Colors

Number of printed colors on your label. Multiple white layers each take a station, adding to the total number of colors. Any photos would be printed as Process(Full Color). If you are unsure, just attach a sample or samples of the items and we will review at the time of quoting.

Proofs

Electronic Proofs
PDF proofs are available at no charge. PDF proofs are for layout proofing purposes only and are not accurate representations of color.

Match Proofs
Match proofs are available for a charge, after the PDF proof has been approved. Match proofs are deemed to be the most accurate color representation available, without actually printing on press. Suggested when Process/Full Color images are present on the label. Passion Labelstm matches spot colors to the printing industry's Pantone Matching System standards.

Press Proofs
Press proofs are for color match situations that are ultra-critical, as they are actual sample runs on the press. They require the purchase of printing plates. They are not die cut into individual labels.

How Proofing affects the timeline

Electronic Proofs
PDF proofs are typically ready within 24-48 hours, depending on the number of items and if artwork revisions or creation from scratch is required. Please ask us if you have any questions regarding this.

Press Proofs
Press proofs are shipped to you within 24-48 hours of your approval of the the PDF proof. You also have the option to visit the production plant for an in-person press check. Please ask us if you have any questions regarding this.
